The presence of a Danish military cemetery here may seem surprising to those who know the neutrality of the Scandinavian countries during the First World War. In 1864, the Danes lost the Second Duchy War and the province of Slesvig (Schleswig in German) to Prussia. In 1864, the Danes lost the Second Duchy War and the province of Slesvig (Schleswig in German) to Prussia. Thus, the war of 1914 saw the participation of 6000 Danish fighters in the German contingent. When Germany was defeated and peace returned, the north of Slesvig became Danish again by referendum in 1920. In 1924, the French state offered to Denmark a piece of land located in Braine to honour these men and to regroup the scattered graves (some of them fell on the hill near there). A monument by the architect Gundlach-Pedersen was inaugurated there in 1934.
