The plateau witnessed violent clashes between the two enemy armies, forever scarring the wheat fields that had become battlefields.

In 1929, when the time was ripe for reconstruction, Jean, Marquis de Croix and owner of the Confrécourt farm, commissioned the erection of the monument bearing the inscription: "The cross has fallen, Christ lives", symbolizing the calvary experienced by the soldiers.
The broken cross marks the break that occurred in the French mind as a result of the war.
The monument is located near the village of Nouvron-Vingré, not far from the Confrécourt farm and the quarries carved by the soldiers
