His tombstone reads: "Albert Chavois, lawyer at the Bordeaux Court of Appeal, commander of the 9th Cie of the 9th Zouaves, Croix de Guerre (3 palms - 3 stars), Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur at Coeuvres - Cutry, June 29, 1918, died gloriously liberating Saconin-et-Breuil on July 18, 1918 at the age of 27. My soul to God, my life to France".
Albert Chavoix, born on February 8, 1891 in Périgueux (Dordogne), was drafted into the armed forces at his own request, and was made a Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur on the battlefield of Coeuvres et Cutry, on June 29, 1918, when he received this commendation: "Very brave officer, trainer of men. During a recent affair, seeking to liaise with a neighboring unit, encountered on his way a house constituting an island of resistance from which machine-gun fire had started; attacking it resolutely, he penetrated it by force with two Zouaves, and brought back eight prisoners, a non-commissioned officer and two machine-guns". The previous day, an attack had been launched to capture a German position on the plateau east of Coeuvres. Despite difficult terrain and heavy machine-gun fire, the 9th Zouaves gained 1,500 meters of ground and captured 31 machine guns, 5 Minenwerfer (trench artillery) and a 77mm cannon, while taking 203 prisoners, including 7 officers and 32 non-commissioned officers"
