This fort, built in 1877, belongs to the Séré de Rivières defense system controlling access to Paris through the Vesle, Oise and Aisne valleys. It provided optical communication between the forts protecting Laon and Soissons. Its earthen rampart and the use of cut stone made it quickly obsolete in the face of the new melinite explosive invented in 1885. The first tests of the new melinite shells took place here in 1886. Its earthen rampart and the use of cut stone made it quickly obsolete in the face of the new melinite explosive invented in 1885. The first tests of the new melinite shells took place here in 1886. The fort was decommissioned two years before the beginning of the war, in 1912, but still played a decisive role on October 23, 1917 during the battle of Malmaison. Note that this fort can only be visited as part of the tours offered by the Visitor Center of the Chemin des Dames - Caverne du Dragon throughout the year ....
