Les Carrières de Confrécourt

Places of memory in Nouvron-Vingré
  • In Confrécourt, during the years of trench warfare, French soldiers found refuge a few meters from the front lines in quarries dug into the hillside.

They left an important legacy of history and memory in the form of stone carvings. Magnificent frescoes and sculptures adorn the walls of the creutes: plaques prefiguring the lists of the dead of our communes, regimental coats of arms, horse heads or women like Marianne, chapels where people prayed before going back into the trenches.

This ensemble is a unique testimony to the Great War.
A few yards away are the ruins of the Confrécourt monastic farm (12th century), the scene of fierce fighting.

Guided tours of the quarries are available on the first Sunday of each month from April to September.
