Dommiers and Saint-Pierre-Aigle were at the heart of the final battles of the Aisne. Between late May and mid-June 1918, to save the Retz forest, the first Renault FT-17 tanks received their baptism of fire, helping to halt the enemy advance. On July 18, near Villers-Cotterêts, 350 Schneider and St Chamond tanks, supported by the 2nd American division, broke through the front from Cutry to Saint Pierre Aigle.
This marked the beginning of the German retreat.
